Do you own a piece of artwork that you don't want anymore and are thinking about throwing into the trash?
Well, don't do it!
Today's DIY will help open up your painting side! Take an old painting and transform it into something new and modern!
Even if you don't have an old piece of art, you can go to a consignment store (i.e. Goodwill, Salvation Army) and purchase one for a very low price.
Let's get started!
Supplies:
8x10 old painting (either stretched canvas, canvas panel or print)
Medium to large paintbrush
Stencil
Acrylic paints (I'm using white and dark blue, but feel free to use whatever colors you like)
(If print or canvas panel) Roll of masking tape or painter's tape
Newspaper
Cup of water
2 small paper cups
Paper towel
Step 1:

Lay the newspaper down, and put the canvas on top of it. Take the white and dark blue paints and squeeze each paint into its own paper cup to keep the paints separate and accessible.
If you have a canvas panel or print, use the masking or painter's tape to tape it to the table.
Step 2:

Grab the paint brush, soak half of the bristles into the white paint, and start painting the canvas gently with light streaks. Do this to the entire painting. When you're finished, dip the brush into the water and swish it around to clean the brush, then dry the brush using the paper towel. Let the painting dry for about 30 minutes.
Step 3:

After the 30 minutes are finished (or the paint has dried - whichever is sooner), grab the stencil and place it on the left side edge of the canvas. Take your dark blue paint and start painting the stencil. Try not to get paint outside of the stencil.
Step 4:

Pull the stencil slowly as to not smear the paint, and then place it adjacent to the already-painted pattern. Paint then stencil, and then lift it slowly. Keep doing this so that the design is in a jacquard kind of pattern. Keep painting the stencil until there is no more free space to paint the stencil onto the painting.
Step 5:

If you're using a canvas panel or print, peel the tape off of the edges. Let the painting dry for about 30 minutes.
And ta-da! You've just created a sensational work of art! Awesome!

Time to hang up the painting (and the paint brushes).
Until next time!
Keeping it Classy & Crafty :-)
